Customer perception is critical in any language and failure to handle secondary languages properly can be an expensive mistake….

Of course you do – we all learnt as small children and use it every day.   Well most of us probably also drive every day but that doesn’t make us Lewis Hamilton – and nor do selfies and family holiday snaps turn us into Annie Leibovitz.

But you do know your business and your market better than anyone so surely you must be the best person to write about it?  In truth, you are probably too close to the subject and a lack of objectivity can be counter-productive.

An even bigger issue is the reluctance of many companies to invest in professional content – despite the fact they are perfectly comfortable bringing in other specialists such as designers.  Effective communication is about more than stringing a few sentences together and it can completely change the way a company, product or service is perceived.

Where does it go wrong?

In addition to general style and grammatical construction, some common errors are:

• convoluted explanations

• constant repetition of key words

• excessive branding

• unnecessary detail

• lack of consistency

• misuse of individual words

• inaccurate proofing

The best writers will take the time to understand a client’s business, connect with relevant target audiences, make sure messaging remains consistent and avoid all of the above!

Overall, they will make you look and sound good……………and hence generate the right response.

Working with Keyboard gives clients the advantages and confidentiality of in-house support - but with the financial flexibility of an external resource.  Contact Sue Mather to find out how we can transform your content and the way you present your business.  Keyboard offers quick cost estimates, fast turnaround when required and an adaptable, high quality service at realistic prices.

Customer perception is critical in any language and failure to handle secondary languages properly can be an expensive mistake….

International commerce increasingly demands the use of English but often the quality of the written word suffers – and a lot can be lost in translation! Companies are not making sure the content they produce in English matches the same high, professional standards offered in their native languages.

It’s common to see badly constructed English; misuse of individual words which can completely change the meaning; and confused, difficult to understand copy. And yet some simple editing can transform translations by ensuring the writing is accurate, current in its use of the language and also reflects the required tone and style.

Fast – but is it accurate?

Multi-lingual launches, websites, manuals, brochures, presentations and marketing collateral will often be needed within silly deadlines and the line of least resistance is quick, often internal or web generated translations.  Unfortunately, one mistranslated word can completely misrepresent the message or the organisation and serious cultural goofs can also creep in.

Finding the right combination of copywriting expertise and knowledge of the business, sector or industry is undoubtedly difficult.  Web translation services are unlikely to offer the
solution and traditional translation agencies rarely put clients in direct contact with the
translator – it’s all a bit 'remote'.  Yet it’s so important to show your overseas customers respect by taking the time to communicate with them in a professional manner.

Signs like these will always raise a smile but don’t let the joke be on you, your content and your business……
